Buddhas and Buttheads: More than a Book Club

We started by playing cards and reading books and have always been a bit more than a book club.

Our meetings have included several pilgrimages to the Tetons where we have hiked the trails and once attended one of the Yellowstone National Park courses at Lamar Valley, this one on wildflowers.

We also took an all girls kayak to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico after reading Gene Kira's book, "King of the Moon."

The Origin of Buddha's and Buttheads

The origin of our book club and it's name goes way back to February of 2002 when Annie, Joanie and I went with our husbands to kayak in the Bahia Almejas in the Baja. On the way down, while the three of us played cards in the airport, we decided that we missed playing games and should form a club and play games and read books upon our return.

We had hired a guide to take us into a remote bay near Magdalena Bay so that we could kayak among the gray whales and up close witness the incredible creatures breaching, spy hopping, and swimming with their young. After each day's kayaking we would sit around and visit over a meal and a beach fire. One conversation took us to Buddhist philosophy eventually prompting a wiseacre remark by one of the to be unnamed husbands (first initial between O and Q). This provoked a quick retort by his wife that there are buddhists and there are buttheads. We all had a good laugh and a nascent book club got it's name.

We started with the three of us, it grew to four. Eventually more members joined and we dropped the games and focused on books.
